No TC Marcia and Chinese New Year in the Whitsundays

24 February 2015
Happy Chinese New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai!

It was so wonderful to see the town of Airlie Beach embracing the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Goat, with some very colourful, fun festivities. There were fireworks on the main beach and dragon dancers to bring luck for the new year. Our major ferry company even had a live goat to welcome their passengers that day!

While the traditional gift at Chinese New Year is a red envelope with money in it… we were just glad that the new year didn’t give us a cyclone!

For a while there it looked like TC Marcia was going to come in our direction, but she turned and followed the path originally forecast. We were very lucky. For those who don’t know just how big Queensland is, where it made landfall is about 5 hours south of here, and from there it kept going south. Our thoughts are with the residents of the towns that bore the brunt of the bad weather.

In contrast, we barely had any wind or rain that day, so it’s business as usual in the Whitsundays!
