Derwent Hunter’s secret snorkelling spots revealed

The snorkelling is beautiful in our secret spots

We’ve done some extensive research around the Whitsunday Islands, and have found some locations which have amazing coral to see, and beautiful fish life. Even after dear Debbie visited us in March, we’re still able to provide our guests with an exceptional snorkelling experience. But don’t take our word for it – see what our recent travellers have said for themselves!

See the lovely soft corals growing like weeds, and you can see the new shoots on the tips of the hard corals too…

This week’s favourite photos

We’ve been able to get the sails right up, even in the light winds we’ve had this week. Guests have been delighted with the coral snorkelling and beach visits, even when it was overcast. Check out this week’s favourite pics.

Snorkelling for everybody

Snorkelling is a highlight of a trip on Derwent Hunter. We do take you to some of the best coral in the Whitsundays. We’ve got a selection of good quality equipment for everyone from the confident to the hesitant snorkeler.

  • For everyone: Crew member Nygel is keeping watch here over a group of snorkelers in the water at Stonehaven.
  • For confident snorkelers: Snorkelling gear of mask, snorkel and fins, is provided free of charge, including wetsuits if desired.
  • For keen but not so confident snorkelers: We have life jackets and noodles for extra flotation – with a noodle under your arms in a big U shape you can confidently put your face in the water to watch the fish swim by.
  • For hesitant snorkelers: Check this bright orange thing out – it’s a bathoscope, that allows you to view under the water without getting your face wet at all. You put the wide end into the water and look into the small end, the viewfinder, like a pair of goggles. Voila – underwater exploration from the dinghy!

We love cruise ship days

We love having cruise ship passengers on board for a day of exploration. It’s a great contrast to be able to sail our 70 year old timber tallship right past a luxury modern cruise liner.
