The Captain’s Log

Derwent Hunter crew teaching kids how to tie knots on the boat family friendly school holiday Whitsunday tours

School Holidays are here

With perfect weather on the horizon, we’re very excitedly looking forward to all the fun families and travellers we’re going to meet over the September-October school holidays.

Our Kids Eco Pirate program will be in full swing to keep the little pirates occupied and having fun (and learning!) while they explore the Whitsundays with us.

Kids will be given a special series of tasks to complete, and some fun temporary tattoos. Once complete, they will receive a signed certificate from the captain.

What a Whale season!

Well that was a fantastic whale season we just had! We had some wonderful encounters, including this mother and calf in the first week or so of September.

This magnificent moment was captured by the Derwent Hunter skipper from up the mast. September is the tail end of the whale season in the Whitsundays, hard to imagine that this little calf and mum have probably now begun the Antarctic migration south.

We have enjoyed sharing the beautiful Whitsundays with these magnificent creatures and look forward to welcoming them back next year.

Whale season usually runs from late June to early September.

Dolphins

We also had some amazing dolphin experiences lately, with pods of them riding our bow wave as we sailed along.

More on family travel

Our crew are all trained EcoGuides through EcoTourism Australia, and we have a couple of marine biologists on staff as well! We simply LOVE talking about the ocean, the fish, the coral, and the islands. It’s so wonderful to be able to share information about the Whitsunday marine world and show our guests in person.

We take you to a private coral garden on Hook Island for snorkelling, where we provide support from the dinghy, and can direct you to interesting marine life or structures that we can see from the surface.

Guests who want to help sail our beautiful historic tall ship are encouraged to! Help hoist the sails, take the helm, and steer us home to Airlie Beach.
